Winter has swiftly blown onto our shores. Most may be demotivated by the mere idea of being outside during the constant cold. However, there is no better time to be gardening than now and there are multiple important tasks to be attended to. Winter is our yearly opportunity to tend to our resting plants. It is the preparation period for the explosive growth season just a few brief months away. During this time we prioritize the trimming of our shrubs that flowered extensively for the last 10 months such as Roses and Bougainvilleas. We also trim back all overgrown hedges and climbers as their growth slows during the short days. It is also the ideal time for maintenance tree felling as many have shed all their leaves. There is more wonder to Winter – water in abundance. Long forgotten are the woes of plants parched by warm westerly winds as the weekly cold fronts sweep over the Western Cape. These weather conditions are ideal for many plants to self-seed and germinate in moist soil. Good soil moisture is essential and highly conductive to plant establishment and growth. We highly recommend our clients to embark on landscaping endeavors with us during this season as seeds sown and plants installed have the highest success rate. Grab your gumboots and schedule a consultation with us in your backyard.
